Thrissur, the cradle of culture of Kerala is decorated with Vadakkunnathan (Siva) Temple, from where the name derived. The old name was 'Thrishivaperur' means the place with 'Lord Shiva's name'. The Thrissur Pooram, celebrated during April-May is top on the list of cultural attraction of the city. The Kudamattom (Umbrella Display competition), drum concerts and the spectacular fireworks all add colour to the Pooram celebration.

The significant culture promoting institutes like Kerala Sahitya Academy, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy and Kerala Lalithakala Academy are head quartered at Thrissur to promote the growth of Malayalam language, literature, dance, music, drama, folk arts, fine arts and artistic heritage of Kerala. The famous Kerala Kalamandalam is also situated in Thrissur District.

Aryabhata, the world famous mathematician and astronomist was believed to be born in Kodungallor. Thrissur give birth to famous thinkers and writers such as Joseph Mundassery, C. Achuthamenon, P. Bhaskaran and many other progressive philosophists. St. Thomas, the renowned Christian missionary and Malik Ibn Deenar, the messenger of Allah were visited Thrissur, who have established Christianity and Islamism respectively in India. Sree Narayana Guru, Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi have visited Thrissur, which helped people to fight against social injustices in the caste-ridden society of Kerala. |
